Poetry Friday: Accidental poetry

January 7th, 2011

As I do every week, I was searching for a poem to use for this week’s Poetry Friday roundup. I grabbed Jeff Anderson’s book Mechanically Inclined off my shelf and flipped through it. I found no “real” poems, but I found this chart of nouns and -ing verbs. Now, tell me this is not poetry!

Pedals        spinning, pumping, turning
Hands       gripping, gripping handlebars
Wheels        spinning, splashing, turning, skidding
Face       grunting, dripping with sweat, covered in mud
Legs       pumping, standing, grinding
Sweat        dripping, staining, soaking his shirt
Mud       splattering, flying, dripping, covering his legs

Oh wow, some great words there! My goal for my poetry writing in 2011 is to “amp up the vocabulary.” This helps. Thanks!

It IS poetry! Thanks for sharing…that book, by the way, is a fabulous grammar resource.

I agree. My students and I too are kicking it up a notch with word choice. ~Theresa
